The Top Family Activities in Hawaii on Every Island

Hiking at Pololū Valley Lookout

If you’re looking for a family-friendly hike that will afford you views of one of the most beautiful coastlines in Hawaii, head to Pololū Valley Lookout. From there, you can catch the Pololū trail, a mostly easy 0.6-mile hike that descends to one of Hawaii’s natural treasures, a black sand beach. Two safety notes to consider:
The start of the trail has some steep parts and can get muddy after the rains
There are no lifeguards at the black sand beach, so don’t go in the water.

Snorkeling at Kahalu’u Beach Park

Discover what’s beneath the waves at Kahalu’u Beach Park. The beach is protected by a cove, which gives it its famously calm and shallow waters, perfect for beginner snorkelers. Plus, it has picnic areas for a post-snorkel snack, lifeguards, outdoor showers, and gear rental shops on site. Your ocean explorers can expect to see a range of sea life here, including turtles, monk seals, and the occasional Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (the state fish of Hawaii).

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

Experience prehistoric natural wonders at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The park does contain two active volcanoes. However, if you’re not comfortable taking your kids near them, ignite their imaginations in Thurston Lava Tube, a subterranean cave carved out by (now dry and cool) flowing lava. The cave is well-lit and paved, making it a fun yet safe stroll. If you feel like staying in your car, cruise Crater Rim Drive. This roughly 30-minute drive has several great lookout spots for taking in the park, including Waldron Ledge, a scenic turnout that’s stroller-accessible and offers views of the crater.

Kona Coffee Farm

Your kids probably don’t drink coffee, but they’ll still enjoy touring a coffee farm — and Kona has plenty. You can find both driving and walking tours, during which you’ll learn about the history of Kona coffee and the coffee-making process. Most end with a tasting, that usually comes with other snacks your kids can enjoy. If you pick up a rental car at the Kona Airport, you can easily tour several farms in one day.

Snorkeling at Molokini Crater

Combine snorkeling with volcanic formations with a trip to Molokini Crater. This partially submerged crater’s walls protect the waters within them from winds and strong currents, creating a peaceful place for swimming and snorkeling. It’s also known to have some of the clearest waters in all of Hawaii, so you and your family are almost guaranteed to spot some of the 250 varieties of fish that live here. You can also book a boat tour, many of which are complete with snacks, water gear, and a friendly guide. Some boats even have water slides, which kids will love to ride into the ocean!

Whale Watching (Seasonal: December-April)

Even the most unenthusiastic of teenagers will lose their cool when they see a whale up close. Luckily, Hawaii offers many opportunities to view these majestic creatures. December through April is the official whale-watching season, with activity peaking in January and February. A boat tour is the best way to get up close to the whales. Some boats have hydrophones that let you listen to the mammal’s underwater sounds.

Maui Ocean Center

If you prefer to get to know sea animals from land, head over to Maui Ocean Center. Rated as one of the best aquariums in the U.S., this three-acre facility can offer a full day of education and entertainment. Stop by its massive living tropical reef — the largest in any aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. Visit the turtle lagoon, where you can view these peaceful animals from the surface and underwater. Experience thrills at the Open Ocean Exhibit, complete with a walkthrough tunnel in which you’ll be surrounded by sharks and rays.

Haleakalā National Park

Whether you’re looking for another opportunity to hike or to just relax with breathtaking views, head to Haleakalā National Park. The park preserves the landscape of the upper slopes of its namesake volcano and serves as the home to several endangered species. One of the most popular things to do here is to catch the sunrise from the park’s summit. However, if you aren’t early risers, consider an afternoon hike on the Hosmer Grove Trail, where you can spot dozens of native birds and plants.

Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

Possibly one of the most unique places you can snorkel in all the islands, Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area within a volcanic crater. Its structure guards it from strong winds, creating gentle waters that are perfect for young swimmers. There are designated snorkeling areas, and lifeguards on duty. Starfish, sea cucumbers, and crabs are just some of the ocean animals you might spot here.

(Note that reservations are required, and a stop by the Marine Education Center, where you’ll watch a 9-minute video on how to respect the environment, is mandatory before entering the beach area. Luckily, most kids enjoy learning about marine life at the center).

Boat Cruises

If you’re looking to relax on the water rather than dive in, there are a number of boat cruises available — many of which launch from popular Waikiki beach. Take a glass bottom tour to see marine life from a new perspective. Enjoy a dolphin-watching tour to see these friendly creatures playing in the waves. Catch dinner and a live cultural performance on an evening cruise. Or (and this is always a hit amongst young ones) watch a fireworks show just offshore on a nighttime boat ride.

Polynesian Cultural Center

Immerse yourselves in the rich traditions of Polynesia at this must-see attraction. With six villages, each with live shows and interactive exhibits on a distinct culture including Tahiti, Samoa, and — of course — Hawaii, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a place you could easily spend an entire day. Boasting traditional dances, warrior tattoo demonstrations, drum shows, canoeing, craft-making opportunities, and authentic regional cuisine, this destination will transport you and your family to other worlds.

Zoos and Aquariums

Oahu is an animal lover’s dream destination, with both a terrific aquarium and zoo housing thousands of animals and exciting exhibits. The Honolulu Zoo is organized into three ecological zones: the Pacific Islands, the African Savannah, and the Asian and American Tropical Forests. Between the trio, you can see hippos, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and many other tropical species.

The Waikiki Aquarium is home to over 500 species and 3,500 marine animals, many of which can be viewed through interactive exhibits. Don’t miss Keiki Time, an early learning class that teaches children about sea animals through singing, storytelling, crafts, dance, and play. The aquarium’s friendly staff and volunteers lead this popular event.

Na ‘Āina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park

While this attraction wasn’t officially designed for children, it quickly became a popular playground for little ones. In fact, it has a Children’s Garden, complete with a jungle tree house, fountains, and climbable structures. Kids can cool off in Jack’s Fountain, a shallow and safe area to wade and splash in (so bring those bathing suits and towels!). Outside food is allowed in the park, so pack a picnic and dine amongst the life-like bronze statues.

Plantation Railway

Take a sweet ride on the Plantation Railway! This 40-minute train ride through a sugar plantation is narrated, so you’ll learn about the rich sugar-making history of the island while sitting inside the beautiful floor-to-ceiling mahogany train cars. There’s even a stop to feed farm animals! This is one of the best family activities in Hawaii for times when you’re ready to rest your feet from hiking and paddling, but still want a unique experience.

Treat Yourself to Shave Ice

A trip to Hawaii wouldn’t be complete without shaved ice, and Kauai is known as one of the best islands for this colorful treat. Shave ice is a frozen desert with a base of finely shaved ice, flavored with syrups and other sweet toppings. Kauai has plenty of shave ice shops to choose from, including ones with classic flavors, build-your-own toppings bars, and unique, regional flavors.
